A lot of talk recently has surrounded Unmanned Aerial Vehicles, more commonly known as drones, as the hobby has grown in popularity.

The McPherson Airport Authority, along with the Hutchinson Airport, will be hosting a public meeting Wednesday evening to help inform you about UAV technology and the regulations and safety issues involved.

John Ferguson is the CEO of Skynet Industries and says the usage of drones has evolved over recent years.

“Originally, I started Skynet as a company to provide just services,” Ferguson, who also teaches a UAV class at Central Christian College, said. “But then, as I saw the market evolve, I added revenue streams into Skynet. One of which is custom building aircraft.”

Among the services Ferguson offers is an exclusive contract with Westar Energy.

“We're their exclusive provider for unmanned systems,” he said. “And we are providing unmanned systems for cattle ranchers who just want to sit on their porch and just put the aircraft into autopilot and just go check on their cows.”

The meeting will begin at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday at the McPherson Airport. Ferguson and Hutchinson airport manager Pieter Miller will be the two speakers and will provide a question and answer opportunity.

RSVPs are requested at 241-0684.
