It was a strong finish to the regular season for the surging McPherson College men’s soccer team on Senior Night here Tuesday.
The Bulldogs swamped Saint Mary 5-1 on the artificial carpet to finish KCAC play with a 7-3 record, which has earned them the No. 3 seed in the conference’s postseason tournament. Mac, which won both the regular season and postseason tournament last year to make nationals, host county rival Bethany College at 7 p.m. Saturday.
The victory also assured the Bulldogs of a winning season as they climbed to 10-8 after spending most of their year south of the .500 border.
The Bulldogs jumped all over the Spires, scoring all five of their goals in the first half. Kevin Ndongo and Chris Kelly scored two apiece and Omar Perez had the other. Nick Torres assisted on two of the goals and Greg Roller also had an assist.
Arthur Lamparter was in goal for this game and had to turn back only one shot.
• Mac women 0, Saint Mary 0 — It was a disappointing draw for McPherson College’s women, who closed KCAC regular-season play at 5-4-1 and are 9-7-1 overall.
Saint Mary had entered the game without a KCAC win.
The Bulldogs had many opportunities in the second half, but just couldn’t convert. Sheryl Evans was terrific in goal for Mac with seven saves during the 110-minute game.
Mac is the No. 5 seed in the postseason tournament, which means it goes on the road Friday to play county rival Bethany College at 7 p.m. at Anderson Field.
