HESSTON — Garden Plain gambled and it came up snake eyes for Hesston High on Tuesday.

After Hesston had taken a 21-14 lead in overtime on a touchdown by Zach Esau and a PAT by Garrett Roth, the Owls’ Alex Becker connected with Chip Dockers on a 10-yard score to draw within 21-20.

The Owls then decided to gamble and went for the win.

Becker, after avoiding the Hesston pass rush, found Keynan Wright for the 2-point conversion and 22-21 victory in the first round of the Class 3A football playoffs.

Hesston had led 14-6 at the half on a 4-yard run by Alex Hostetler and a 13-yard pass from Esau to Zach Vogt.

Garden Plain scored in the third quarter on a TD run by Wright, with Becker hitting Dockers for the 2-pointer to tie the game.

Esau ran for 99 yards and threw for 54. Parker Roth added 80 yards rushing.

Hesston has had three terrific years under coach Clint Rider as with this year’s 8-2 record, it is now 26-4 during his tenure.
