The holiday season kicked off officially Thursday night with the first appearance of Santa Claus in McPherson, as he helped with the Snowball Drop at the Plaza on Main Street.

Jennifer Burch, McPherson Chamber of Commerce Executive Director, says the kick off continues this weekend with the Holiday Open House.

“It's just all over the community,” Burch said. “We just kind of have designated this weekend as shopping in McPherson for the holiday season.”

McPherson Main Street Executive Director Ann Engel says the holidays also bring about the return of the Candy Cane Cash.

“You shop in the designated stores,” Engel said. “We want you to shop everywhere, but there are certain stores that are participating. For every $10 that you spend, you get a stamp on a card.”

When you fill up a card, you put it into a drawing for $500 in candy cane cash to spend in the stores.

The drawing will be on Dec. 31.
