COLUMBIA, Mo. — McPherson College’s women led NAIA Division I Columbia College by five points after a quarter on Friday, but it was all Cougars after that as they opened play in the Cost Cutters Tipoff Classic by plodding past the Bulldogs, 59-48.
Mac, which fell to 0-3 albeit all against highly regarded teams as it has played a brutal early schedule, came out sizzling for a 19-14 first-quarter lead.
But the Cougars clamped down from there as Mac managed only a half-dozen points in the second quarter to trail 26-25 at the half. Columbia controlled the second half as the Bulldogs simply couldn’t warm up.
Bailey Brown scored 10 points to lead Mac, which was 20 of 55 from the field and only got the foul line six times, making three. The Bulldogs also turned it over 20 times as that has been a season-long problem.
One plus was the bench as it provided 21 points, led by Regan McClellan with eight.
The Bulldogs play William Woods University at 1 p.m. Saturday to complete Classic play.
Mac (48) — Brown 10, S. Smart 8, Bruner 5, G. Smart 4, McClellan 8, Allen 7, Battle 6.
