ATCHISON — Bethany College’s women outscored Avila University 20-12 in the final quarter Friday in the opening round of the Benedictine College American Basketball Classic, but it wasn’t enough to rally the Swedes as they fell, 58-55.

Avila jumped out to a 32-22 halftime lead as the Swedes couldn’t get warmed up and it was still an 11-point game going into the final period.

“The run we put together in the final 6 minutes was pretty incredible, but unfortunately it couldn't make up for the lack of discipline on offense and defense that we failed to show during the first 34 minutes of the game," Bethany coach Brett Morehouse said. "Defensively, when you give up less than 60 points and hold a team to 35 percent shooting, you're going to win a lot of games. However, we had a lot of costly unforced turnovers, to go along with 11 missed free throws and that really spelled the difference."

Bethany’s Adriane Davis scored 19 points, but needed 18 shots to do it. Joleen Chanco added 11 points. The Swedes had only two reserves score as the starters carried the load.

Bethany, 1-1, plays Benedictine at 3:00 today.
