SHAWNEE, Okla. — McPherson College’s women were halfway home to a major basketball upset on Monday night.
The Bulldogs sprinted to a 39-27 halftime lead over NAIA Division I school St. Gregory’s, a team that had recently defeated longtime KCAC power Southwestern.
But it all fell apart in a nightmare of a third quarter, as St. Gregory’s erupted for a staggering 39 points in 10 minutes, which keyed an 88-63 comeback victory.
The Bulldogs had been sensational in the first two periods, scoring 18 points in the first quarter and 21 in the second. But St. Gregory’s followed up its 39-point third quarter with 22 more in the final period for a 61-point second half.
Turnovers did the Bulldogs in as they finished with 25.
Bailey Brown had a strong game in defeat with 21 points and seven rebounds, while Georgia Smart chipped in with 13 points.
The Bulldogs, now 1-5, open KCAC play on Thursday when they travel to Winfield to take on Southwestern. Three of their losses are to NAIA Division I schools.
