McPherson emergency personnel responded to a house fire in the 200 block of South Hickory Sunday night and fire chief Jeff Deal says the situation could have been deadly, had it not been for the residential sprinkler system.

“The gravity of the situation was, when we got the call at a little after 10'o'clock (Sunday) night, it came in as a residential fire at this facility with one possible trapped occupant,” Deal said. “The individual in question was somebody who was not ambulatory and could not evacuate themselves.”.

Compounding the issue for the MFD was the fact they only had four firefighters on duty last night. With the fire dynamics, Deal could foresee the situation becoming quite dire. Fortunately, the residential sprinkler system had the fire extinguished by the time the first responders were on-scene.

“That was definitely a successful situation for residential sprinklers,” Deal said.

The residence in question was the Hickory Heights MCDS housing unit. No one was injured in the fire and the cause is still under investigation.
