A high school math teacher at Dodge City High School was named the 2016 Kansas Teacher of the Year during a special ceremony Saturday night in Wichita.

McPherson board member Jeff Johnson was in attendance and said during Monday's board meeting that he gained a greater appreciation of USD 418's teaching staff, as the stories he heard from nominees Saturday could have been McPherson's stories.

“You guys do a wonderful job and I appreciate your efforts,” Johnson said to the staff and administration in attendance Monday evening at Eisenhower Elementary School. “I appreciate all your efforts, and I know the board does.”

Justin Coffey was named the 2016 Kansas Teacher of the Year from a field of eight finalists. It was the second year in a row a teacher from Dodge City received the honor.
