McPherson High’s boys, the two-time defending Class 4A Division I state basketball champions, will start out their season trying to make up some ground.

The Bullpups are ranked No. 4 by the Kansas Basketball Coaches Association as the preseason polls were announced today.

Bishop Miege, which is set to unveil 6-11 import Bol Bol on the varsity level this season —the son of the late NBA star 7-6 Manute Bol — debuts at No. 1, with last year’s runner-up to the Bullpups, Basehor-Linwood, at No. 2.

Abilene, a team MHS plays before Christmas on the Cowboys’ home floor, is No. 3. After MHS at No. 4, Andover Central rounds out the Top 5.

Buhler is No. 6, with Andale, Paola, Bonner Springs and Eudora completing the Top 10. MHS, of course, plays Buhler twice during the season and Andale once.

The Bullpup girls open at No. 2 behind defending state champion Bishop Miege.

The Top 5 includes Andover Central at No. 3, followed by Kansas City Piper and Labette County.

Abilene headlines the second five, with Buhler, Wellington, Paola and Chanute completing the Top 10.

As for the area teams, Hesston’s two-time defending state champion girls again start at No. 1 in Class 3A. The Swather boys are No. 2 in Class 3A behind Scott City.

The Moundridge girls, last year’s Class 2A runner-up, are No. 4 in Class 2A.
