HAYS — McPherson High graduate Kyler Kinnamon played a big role Tuesday night in Fort Hays State’s 92-76 victory over Newman University in an early season showdown of undefeated basketball teams.
Kinnamon came up huge in the first half when he scored all eight of his points off the bench. He finished the game 3 of 5 from the field, including 2 of 3 from 3-point, and also had six assists and only one turnover in 18 minutes.
“Kyler’s excellent,” Tiger teammate Rob Davis told The Hays Daily News. “He brings energy, whatever you need. If Craig (Nicholson) is out, he’ll pick up all the slack that Craig does when he’s out there. Kyler’s a good player.”
“I think our young guys coming off the bench are really gaining confidence,” Fort Hays coach Mark Johnson said. “Kyler is getting there and you see it the last two games.”
Fort Hays, which exploded to a 55-39 halftime lead before the teams played on even terms the rest of the way, is now 4-0.
The Tigers host KCAC member Sterling College on Saturday in an exhibition game. Then it’s on to conference play as they host Washburn on Dec. 2. Christian Ulsaker, former All-State All-Class for McPherson High, plays for the Ichabods.
