BPU battling ice, tree limbs to get power restored

Power outages are continuing to be reported to the McPherson Board of Public Utilities in the wake of this weekend's ice storm.

BPU General Manager Tim Maier says his crews have been been working nearly non-stop to get the main lines back up and running. That included one that happened this morning at McPherson Hospital.

“A tree [limb] came down, and so we had a primary line go back down,” Maier said. “We're going to continue to fight that until we get the ice off the trees. That's really going to be a major issue.”

Additionally, you may have noticed that portions of McPherson streets have had their street lights go out. Maier said that is by design.

“Basically, we turn them off, roll up the wires, and put them at the curb,” Maier said. “That will be the last thing on our list. Really, the primary thing right now is to try and get the customers back on and then we'll do street lights after we do that.”

Maier estimated that, at one point this morning, between 200 and 300 customers were without power. If you do lose power, you can contact the BPU at (620) 245-2515, (620)245-2555 or (620)245-2560 during business hours. After hours, you can call 245-2554.
