McPherson’s eighth-grade boys were pushed to the limit in their basketball season opener here Tuesday against Goddard, but came away with a 37-33 success.
Cody Stufflebean was a force with 16 points.
“Felt like the effort was tremendous tonight,” MMS coach Tyler Brown said. “We really showed another level than what I have seen in practice, which is good and bad. Love to see we can go to that level, but also means we are not truly getting after it in practice like we should be. As for Game 1 we are not anywhere near our potential. We let Goddard's height and length bother us. We probably had 30-plus turnovers and 15-plus missed layups. Good thing is even though we had stats like that, this group found a way to win. It is always nice to get a "W" for that opening game. Our new league will be extremely tough, but our guys are fighters and competed all the way to the final horn.”
The B-team completed the sweep with a 49-26 rout. Brayden Stout’s 11 points led the balanced scoring.
The Bullpups make their first road trip on Thursday when they head to Maize South.
