MAIZE — A 15-0 second-quarter run by Maize South made the difference Thursday as McPherson’s eighth-grade boys were defeated, 48-35.
MMS, now 1-1, was led by Cody Stufflebean with 15 points, while Kvon Richardson just missed double figures with nine.
“I felt like the effort was there tonight,” MMS coach Tyler Brown said. “We actually outplayed them in the second half 24-20 and at the end of the first quarter only trailed them by one point, 12-13. For whatever reason we couldn't find our way in the second quarter. We were shut out that quarter 0-15 and that was the difference in the game. This team has the potential to be towards the top of the league, we just have to put together four quarters of McPherson-type basketball.”
The B-team is now 1-1 after a 35-21 setback. Riley Koehn topped the scoring with eight points.
MMS returns home Monday to take on Goddard Eisenhower.
MMS A (35) — Stufflebean 15, Richardson 9, Courtney 6, Hoppes 5.
MMS B (21) — Koehn 8, Whitfield 5, Stockham 2, Roller 2, Stecklein 2, Pyle 2.
