Former McPherson College head football coach Brian Ward continues to climb the coaching ladder.

Ward on Tuesday was named defensive coordinator at Syracuse University of the ACC. He is following Dino Babers, the former Bowling Green head coach who last week was named as head coach of the Orangemen.

Ward, who has been Bowling Green’s defensive coordinator, was named interim head coach there when Babers resigned.

Ward will coach Bowling Green in its bowl game Dec. 23 against Georgia Southern — the GoDaddy Bowl. He will then join Babers at Syracuse.

This season, the Falcons’ defense was ninth in the country in plus-minus turnovers (gained 27) and they improved by 42 spots from last year in scoring defense.

Ward had stops at Western Illinois, Drake and North Dakota State. Before that, he led McPherson College to its first-ever NAIA national playoff appearance in 2009. Mac also made nationals the following year under Joe Bettasso, who had been Ward’s defensive coordinator.
