Hesston sweeps Class 5A Emporia

HESSTON — You have to give Hesston credit, it’s not afraid to play anybody.

The Swather basketball teams hosted Class 5A Emporia on Tuesday and were successful in both games.

The Hesston girls held off the Spartans, 37-34. The Swathers lived off their first quarter, as they sprinted to a 16-7 lead and held that advantage the rest of the way.

Cami Richardson scored 10 of her 18 points in the first half to lead Hesston. Katelyn Hageman did not make a field goal, but did knock down 7 of 10 at the foul line.

Hesston is now 2-0 on the year.

The Swather boys were nails at the foul line to outlast Emporia, 69-58. They cashed in 31 of 41, including 10 of 12 by Scott Duerksen and 9 of 11 by Zach Vogt.

Zach Esau led Hesston with 22 points, 13 of those in the first half when the Swathers compiled a 36-26 lead.

Duerksen scored 16 and Vogt added 15.

The Swathers evened their record at 1-1.
