ANDOVER — McPherson’s eighth-grade girls really appear to be hitting their stride.
Both basketball teams are now 4-0 after dominating performances against Andover Central on Thursday.
The A-team played lockdown defense in a 36-9 victory. Andrea Sweat’s 15 points were tops and Cassie Cooks just missed double figures with nine.
The B-team also was impressive on the defensive end, stifling Andover Central during a 32-14 victory. Rachel Carlson led a balanced attack with seven points, one more than Peyton Johnson and Kaliah Tice.
“Our A-team girls settled down after a while and started to play much better than we started the game,” MMS coach Jay Crawford said. “Our defense carried us until we found our way through offensively. Andover Central had nine points at the half and we held them scoreless the whole second half. I was very proud of how we got after them on defense, but we still have things to improve on. The B-team did a great job of sharing the ball and they battled for every loose ball, which is what we call playing the Bullpup way.”
MMS stays on the road Monday to play at Derby North.
MMS A (36) — Sweat 15, Cooks 9, Schieferecke 6, Johnson 2, Strathman 2, Mayfield 2.
MMS B (32) — Hedlund 1, Mayfield 4, Collins 4, Pham 4, Johnson 6, Tice 6, Carlson 7.
