It took one second for McPherson High’s Alex Grennan to clinch a victory for the Bullpups in their wrestling match here Thursday against Chapman.

Grennan and Dustin Lister had waged a 6-minute stalemate at 220 pounds. In the 1-minute overtime, it appeared that neither wrestler was going to score, but with one tick left Grennan scored a takedown for a 3-1 victory.

MHS wound up taking the dual, 36-30. Had Grennan lost his match, it would have ended up in a 33-33 draw and the Bullpups would have lost the tiebreaker.

“Showed a lot of guts there,” MHS coach Doug Kretzer said. “Alex has paid his dues. He’s been on varsity for two years. He had a challenge to get his weight down to be able to wrestle that weight. Once he did that, he’s put in the hard work and that match just came down to guts. Who wanted it and who was going to fight, scratch and grind. Real proud of him.”

The Bullpups never trailed, though it was tight much of the way.

“We had a feeling it was going to come down to the bigs (upper weights),” Kretzer said. “We needed to have a lead going into the last couple of matches. They’ve got the guy who took third in the state (last year) at 195 (Jacob Stoneberger) and then the defending state champ there at heavyweight (Jason Zook). We wrestled good out of the gates. All that pressure came to Alex and he carried it the way we expected him to.”

Chapman actually won eight of the 14 matches, but the Bullpups had the edge in falls. EJ Kretzer at 106, Cole Kretzer at 120, Brynton Crews at 132, Brice Kasting at 145 and Kaleb Jost at 182 all won by falls, while Scott Radke won 12-8 at 138.

• MHS 45, Smoky Valley 27 — The Bullpups completed the sweep by racing to a 16-0 lead and never gave it up.

The Bullpups again were aggressive, as they had six pins among their eight wins. Cole Kretzer, Brynton Crews, Luke Thompson, Jost, Dylan Baldwin and Ty Goss all had pins and EJ Kretzer had a 15-2 win. Seth Morgan won by forfeit to complete the scoring.

"I thought we wrestled well. I thought all three duals between all three teams would be good matches," Doug Kretzer said. "We came out of the gates and wrestled hard. Everybody got on the mat, which was good to see. This team is going to fight and battle and scratch and claw. These guys right now are hungry."

The Bullpups are right back at it today at Colby. Austin Eldredge, third in the state last year, is expected to make his debut for the Bullpups after missing the first two nights.

Smoky Valley and Chapman tied in the other match, 36-36. It took the fifth criteria — most first points scored — to determine that the Vikings were the winner.

"We've got some things to work on," Smoky Valley coach Ben Elliott said  “We had some bright spots out of some of younger kids. We've got some improving to due, but our overall effort was OK."
