The streak is over.
The Hesston girls suffered a 54-48 loss to Garden Plain on Friday, ending their winning streak at 43, which included last year’s 26-0 record and second straight state championship.
Hesston coach Matt Richardson said in the long run that maybe ending the streak will help his team, as so much pressure had been riding on it that it was somewhat of a distraction.
Richardson said his team struggled some with the Owls’ zone, especially in the first half as they trailed 25-15.
Predictably, the Swathers came out on fire in the second half and got the game tied. But Garden Plain pulled away late.
Cami Richardson led the Swathers with 19 points.
• HESSTON BOYS 50, GARDEN PLAIN 35 — Hesston methodically pulled away from the Owls, with Zach Esau and Scott Duerksen scoring 10 points apiece.
Hesston coach Greg Raleigh said Duerksen made some especially big plays as the Swathers overcome a three-point third quarter with 18 in the fourth.
Both Hesston teams continue their tough early schedules tonight playing 4A Rose Hill.
