COLBY — The wait for Austin Eldredge was well worth it.

The McPherson High wrestling standout, sidelined for the first two meets of the season, finally made his long-anticipated debut this weekend in the two-day Colby Invitational.

He scorched the 132-pound class by going 7-0, helping the Bullpups to a 4-3 team record and eighth-place finish out of 16. Eldredge was third in the state last year at 106, but has moved up some weights.

The Bullpups defeated two bigger-class schools in Liberal (42-39) and old rival Hutchinson (45-36). They also scored wins over longtime small-school power Oakley (47-36) and Concordia (48-36).

Their losses were to potential 4A state contender Colby (52-15), Legend, Colo. (48-29) and Goodland (51-25).

“I was very happy with how we competed,” MHS coach Doug Kretzer said. “This is a tough tournament and we got after it. It's a long trip out there to Colby, but worth it. We ended up wrestling nine duals in three days if you include the Chapman and Smoky Valley matches (from Thursday). That's a bunch of wrestling.”’

The Bullpups, Kretzer said, weren’t that far away from being 5-2.

“Colby is really tough and Legend is a very good team,” Kretzer said. “Goodland, we had a couple matches that could have gone the other way and could have easily flipped the score. We grew this weekend, for sure.”

In addition to Eldredge going 7-0, Kretzer was happy with Kaleb Jost (6-1), Cole Kretzer (5-2), Bailey Yarborough (5-2)  and Ty Goss (5-2).

MHS gets to rest a bit as it doesn’t compete on Thursday. It returns on Saturday to compete at Abilene.
