McPherson High and Bishop Miege are the gold standard of bigger-class girls basketball in Kansas, a rivalry that dates back into the infant years of the Bullpup program as the schools met for the state championship in 1980 and 1981, each winning once.
Now the two rivals will meet during the regular season.
MHS Athletic Director Shane Backhus today announced the Bullpups’ beefed-up schedule for the next two years and easily the highlight is a meeting of the super powers.
“Our goal is to play a challenging schedule, especially outside our AVCTL Division III schedule, and I think this schedule shows that with some great match-ups from teams from around the state of Kansas,” Backhus said. “We have some state tournament teams, plus some old rivals back.”
The two titans will meet in a doubleheader in the third game of the season. The teams play in the Roundhouse the first year, then on the Stags’ home floor the following year.
The boys’ game also should be a tremendous contest. The Bullpups will have one of the state’s top juniors in Ben Pyle, while Miege counters with near-7-footer Bol Bol, son of the late NBA star 7-6 Manute Bol. He’ll also be a junior.
The Bullpups also have added Derby, a strong 6A school and former league member as well. In addition, Newton has agreed to resume what used to be one of the state’s best rivalries.
Great Bend is back on the schedule. The Bullpups won’t be playing on the Hy-Vee Shootout as that contract runs out after Friday.
Here is schedule, with dates to be finalized. The schedule flips sites the following year.
