First win for Little River girls

BROOKVILLE — The Little River girls will go into Christmas with some holiday cheer.

Little River finally joined the winner’s ranks on Friday with a 34-33 victory over Ell-Saline.

The Redskins had to fend off a furious rally by the Cardinals, who outscored Little River 9-3 in the final 8 minutes as Little River had unfurled a 12-2 third-quarter sizz.

Melanie Renken led Little River with 10 points, with Allie Peters adding eight. Free throws were a key as Little River made 13 of 16 to record its first win after five losses. It’s also Trey Look’s first win as Little River coach.

• LITTLE RIVER BOYS 43, ELL-SALINE 38 — The Redskins kept the Cardinals winless on the season.

Little River outscored the Cardinals by three points in both the first and third quarters to assume its lead.

Jeb Sauer had another good game for Little River with 15 points. It was the Redskins’ second win of the year.
