DENVER — Bethany College’s men are hoping for a split in Denver.
The Swedes opened play in the Johnson and Wales Classic on Friday with an 85-80 loss to Northern New Mexico.
Gary Jones led Bethany with 19 points, Larry McLin scored 15 and Jonathan Gidson added 14 off the bench.
“We did not start well at all with numerous defensive mistakes," Bethany coach Clair Oleen said. "We regrouped and got going. Then had a lapse in the second half after getting up by 15. Then it was a back-and-forth battle the rest of the way. We battled, but we gave up far too many offensive rebounds."
The game marked the return of June Johnson, who had eight points and five rebounds off the bench. He had missed the last eight games due to a suspension.
Bethany, now 5-9, plays host Johnson and Wales tonight.
