Avenue A reopening delayed to new year

Avenue A will not be opened to thru traffic before the holidays.

That's the announcement from the McPherson City Public Works Department. Director Jeff Woodward had been hopeful they would get the street reopened this week, as they had all of the concrete placed on the road with the exception of ramps and sidewalk on the east end.

“There's approximately 250 feet on both sides of Avenue A that will complete phase one,” Woodward said. “The goal [was] to seal the pavement and have it open before the Christmas holiday.”

Unfortunately, that goal will not come to pass due to unavoidable delays, the city announced in a press release Wednesday. Residents will still be able to access homes along the project, though you are being asked not to park on Avenue A.

The City says only minimum work will continue through Jan. 3, though they are confident they will have it opened by the second week of January.

Phase II, which goes to the east towards the railroad tracks, will commence when weather permits.
