SALINA — McPherson’s eighth-grade A-boys outlasted Salina Lakewood 41-36 in their return to action on Thursday.
Hayes Schmid, making his return to the lineup after missing all of December with an injury, led the Bullpups with 19 points while Cody Stufflebean added 11. The victory improved MMS to 4-3 on the season.
“For the first time we had a team that was completely healthy and we needed every one of them,” MMS coach Tyler Brown said. “With over 45 fouls being called in the B-game, I believed everyone was able to enter the game at some point and time. Even in the A game players picked up two fouls extremely quick. But with a better rotation of guys in and out of the game we were able to weather the storm and rally in the fourth quarter scoring 16 points. Hayes had an terrific debut back from a broken hand leading scores with 19 and securing the game at the free throw line going 5 for 6 down the stretch.”
The B-team prevailed 45-38 as Riley Koehn tossed in 15 points and Trenton Stecklein furnished 13. The B-team also is 4-3.
The Bullpups are home on Monday to play Salina South.
