Mac cagers host Sterling on Saturday

The McPherson College women are a different basketball team at home than they are on the road.

The Bulldogs are 4-2 at the friendly Sport Center confines and could easily be 6-0. They lost at the buzzer to Ottawa and with 2 seconds left to Friends. What really hurt in the Ottawa game is that the winning shot came from nearly halfcourt.

The Bulldogs will try to continue their good play at home on Saturday when Sterling arrives to town. Mac is coming off a 77-48 home thrashing of future KCAC member York College in what probably was its best all-around game of the year.

Tip time is 5 p.m., with the men to follow. The pre-game on 96.7 KBBE-FM starts at 4:40, with Chris Swick on the call.

The Sterling women may be the best 5-12 team in Kansas, 3-6 in the KCAC. The Warriors have played everybody tough, including Oklahoma Wesleyan on Thursday as they were outlasted 95-85 in a wildly entertaining game.

Sterling has one of the KCAC’s premier players in guard Hailey Davis, who has had some huge games against the Bulldogs in the past. She poured in 28 points on Thursday.

• MEN LOOK TO SLOW DOWN STERLING — McPherson College’s men, 2-6 in the KCAC and 6-12 overall, will have to ramp up their work on the defensive end as Sterling is coming off a 123-97 win over Oklahoma Wesleyan where defense apparently was only an afterthought.

Former Derby star Josiah Ray poured in 30 points and former Buhler standout Brandon Givens added 29 as the Warriors were 41 of 70 from the field and 15 of 30 from 3-point. The Warriors are 5-4 in the KCAC, but just two games out of second place.

The Bulldogs, who were off on Thursday, have not played since Jan. 2 when they lost 83-59 to Baker after having won three games in a row.

Saturday will mark the return of 6-8 center Reed Rowell, who has been out for more than a month with an ankle injury. Dee Roberts, though, will miss the game with an injury.
