MHS girls improve to 7-0

AUGUSTA — The first half looked like something out of the Twilight Zone Friday night for the McPherson High girls.

In a game that figured to have running clock written all over it since Augusta had lost by 40 points to an Abilene team the Bullpups had defeated, MHS found itself up just 18-17 at the half after it had sprinted to an early 11-0 lead.

Thanks to Emma Yowell, however, the Bullpups were able to pull away to a 50-32 victory to improve to 7-0 on the season.

Yowell knocked down three 3-pointers in the third quarter to open up some breathing space and finished the game with 11, second to Taylor Robertson's 17, who was hounded the entire game by the relentless Riley Zerr. She had only five points at the half before finally starting to shake free with 12 after the break.

"The third quarter, we highlighted that after the game — Emma in particular," MHS coach Chris Strathman said. "I had gotten on Emma in the third quarter actually because she had turned down a 3 and just put the ball on the floor. I said that (shooting the 3) is your game. You've got to shoot the ball… then she came back and was ready to shoot."

MHS went dormant in the first half after its early sizz as it was plagued by fouls and turnovers. It was still tight in the third quarter before Yowell led an 11-1 run to close it out to put the Bullpups up 35-22.

MHS did audition a stifling zone defense in the second half, which caused the Orioles a lot of problems. They finished the game just 8 of 32 from the field.

Madison Wheeler and Jayden Marlnee were much of the Augusta offense with 14 and 12 points, respectively.

MHS finally returns home after playing six of its first seven games on the road to host arch-rival Buhler on Tuesday.

The MHS JV girls came away with a 47-32 victory as Rylee Schrader and Riley Hett tallied nine points apiece. The freshmen won 38-30, as Maggie Leaf's 11 points were tops.
