Bullpup boys slog to 50-38 victory

AUGUSTA — Augusta's boys did their best to ugly up Friday's game with McPherson High.

The Orioles turned it into a methodical, plodding affair. But MHS proved it can grind out a blue-collar victory just as easily as it can win a high-scoring sprint.

MHS improved to 6-1 with a 50-38 victory over the Orioles, who missed 30 of their 42 field goal attempts.

"I thought we played a good defensive game, we did a good job of being alert," MHS coach Kurt Kinnamon said. "On film we had seen they like to run a lot of back cuts, a lot of lobs. I think they only got a couple of those."

But offensively, Kinnamon was somewhat lukewarm as the Bullpups didn't score virtually unabated as has been the case much of the year.

"It was just choppy and part of that is that we hadn't had a game where the offense didn't come easy for Drew (Pyle)," Kinnamon said. "He missed some shots he usually makes… we look to him to score. It thought Marcus (McDaniel) picked us up some with his offense… I thought Ben (Pyle) really competed. The first half it kind of looked like we were going through the motions."

Drew Pyle still managed 18 points, but was 8 of 18 in the rough game where a lot of contact inside was let go. Ben Pyle scored 12 and McDaniel had all nine of his points in the first half.

MHS led only 10-8 after a quarter and inched it out to 24-16 by the half. However, the third quarter turned the tide as the Bullpups unfurled a 17-5 run as their defense flummoxed Augusta with its length.

"I liked how we competed better in the second half," Kinnamon said. "Our rebounding totals aren't going to look very good. With as big of a team as we have, we ought to be a great rebounding team."

The JVs were a 62-46 winner, as Jake Alexander scored 17 points. The MHS freshmen were pushed for a half, leading just 26-21, but outscored the Orioles 21-4 in the third quarter to key a 59-35 victory. Kyler Hoppes tossed in 14 points and Gabe Hoover added 10 to lead the Bullpups.

After a month and a day, the Bullpups finally are back in the Roundhouse on Tuesday when arch-rival Buhler comes a calling.
