SALINA — McPherson’s eighth-grade girls turned to their defense for a sweep of Salina South on Monday.

The Bullpups’ A-team shut down South 24-17 as Andrea Sweat’s 11 points were tops.

“A good road win for us, we did not play our best but found a way to make plays when we needed to at the end of both games,” MMS coach Jay Crawford said. “Our effort was good, but we need to make sure we keep working on things we are struggling with right now.”

The B-team needed overtime to outlast the hosts, 18-16. Avery Mayfield and Kaliah Tice scored four points apiece.

“Avery Mayfield hit a shot to give us the win in overtime,” Crawford said. “I was proud of  how the team came out of the timeout and executed our play. Everyone did the job on that play.”

The Bullpup teams are 7-1 and host Newton on Thursday.

MMS A (24) — Johnson 2, Mayfield 2, Strathman 2, Cooks 7, Sweat 11.
