McPherson’s eighth-grade boys are a different basketball team now that they’re healthy.
The A-team rang up 49 points here Monday against Salina South for a 49-36 victory to improve to 5-3 on the season.
Hayes Schmid, in his second game back from a broken hand, lit it up for 21 points, while Kaleb Hoppes scored 11. Cody Stufflebean just missed double figures with nine.
“I like the direction our team is going since the break,” MMS coach Tyler Brown said. “This was our first game that we either tied or beat our opponent in all four quarters. We are starting to play a complete game. Typically we have had a quarter we just check out on, but for the first time we played tough for 24 minutes. Hopefully we can repeat this now. It makes it difficult on ourselves to win games when we get outscored by seven-plus points in a quarter, but for the second game in a row we had a huge forth quarter. We scored 21 points to close out the game, which was almost half our points.”
The B-team also is 5-3 after surviving a close game with South, 43-36. Trenton Stecklein delievered a 15-point performance and Sam Pyle tallied 10.
The Bullpups are on the road Thursday to play Newton.
