McPherson is one of three Kansas small cities to receive funding through the Community Development Block Grant offered from the Kansas Department of Commerce.
“It's a $300,000 grant on the Small Cities Community Block Grant program for housing rehabilitation,” Nick Gregory, McPherson City Administrator, said.
The money will allow the city to rehab homes, both rentals and owner-occupied, in a particular target area of the city. For this grant cycle, that area is roughly bordered by Elizabeth Street on the north, Avenue A on the south, Fisher Street on the east and Main Street on the west. Main Street will encompass both halves of the street.
“I think it's a huge positive for the community,” Gregory said. “This is the first of what we hope to be many applications that we put in to address a number of areas throughout the community.”
Moundridge was one of the other communities selected for the grant money.
“We basically targeted the original town,” Randy Frazer, Moundridge City Administrator, said. “Kind of the original town-site. That development.”
