Smoky Valley, Hillsboro split games

HILLSBORO — The Smoky Valley girls have been a different basketball team since the calendar flipped to 2016.

Saddled with a 1-3 record at Christmas, the Vikings have ripped off three straight wins in the new year to move past the .500 mark at 4-3.

Smoky Valley stormed back in the fourth quarter on Tuesday for a 42-33 victory over Hillsboro, outscoring the Trojans 16-5 over the final 8 minutes.

Balance was a key as Kate Deterding’s 11 points led the Vikings. Smoky Valley was down 17-10 at the half, but was on fire by doubling the Trojans 32-16 in the second half.

• HILLSBORO BOYS 61, SMOKY VALLEY 56 — It was another tough loss for the Vikings, who are one of the best 1-6 teams around.

The Vikings gave up 31 points in the first half to trail by seven and still were down eight going into the final quarter.

Trey Schneider and Nick Reinert scored 14 points apiece for the Vikes.
