NEWTON — McPherson’s seventh-grade A-boys ran into a buzzsaw tonight.
Newton handed MMS a 53-23 loss to drop the Bullpups to 6-3 on the season.
“We ran into a team tonight that was red hot,” MMS coach Tim Hein said. “It felt like they didn’t miss a shot. They sat in a zone and we didn’t make shots. Unfortunately we didn’t respond to adversity very well at all. We will have to work on our mental toughness over the next week. (Brycen) Labertew battled very hard in the post. (Eli) Pyle did an excellent job sharing the ball and knocking down a couple of 3s to keep us in the game early.”
Max Alexander scored seven points, one more than Pyle.
The margin wasn’t as severe in the B-game, but the result was the same as Newton raced to a 39-23 victory. Dylan Rinker scored eight points for MMS, now 6-3.
“The B-team battled hard tonight,” Hein said. “Rinker, coming back from a hand injury, shot the ball very well. (Blade) Anderson had a nice offensive game, too. (Logan) Ediger and (Cael) Bauer set the tone on the defensive end and forced multiple turnovers. They continue to improve and respond well to our coaching.”
MMS plays next Thursday at Derby.
MMS A (23) — M. Alexander 7, Pyle 6, Elliott 4, Hein 2, Powell 2, Labertew 2.
MMS B (23) — Rinker 8, Anderson 7, Ediger 3, Bauer 2, Elliott 2, Forkell 1.
