STERLING — Smoky Valley’s boys were right there with No. 1-seed Hugoton on Monday in the opening round of the Sterling Invitational.
The Vikings were down just 12-11 after a quarter.
But Hugoton, the No. 3-ranked team in Class 4A Division I, doubled the Vikings 26-13 in the second quarter on its way to a 74-50 victory.
Hugoton wound up scoring 47 points in the middle two quarters as it added 21 in the third period.
Nick Reinert was terrific in defeat for the Vikings with 23 points. Smoky Valley turns around and plays at 4 p.m. today against Remington.
