Shawnee Mission East looked nothing like a team that entered Saturday’s seventh-place game of the McPherson Invitational with a 1-10 record.
The Lancers repeated their proficiency from Thursday night — when they nearly upset McPherson in the first round — by routing Wichita North 77-55, leading many observers to believe they were among the best three teams in the field despite their standing.
East was all over North from the outset, blazing to a 19-10 first-quarter lead and upping it to 33-20 the half. It was more of the same in the second half as the Lancers were up as many as 25 points after the break.
The Lancers had a decided advantage inside and dominated the paint for a 34-26 rebounding edge, not to mention they were able to score easily around the rim. East scored several baskets in the second half to shoot 63 percent and finished the game at 52.
Davis Morrison led four Lancers in double figures with 24 points. Mark Ward added 16, Jay Guastello 14 and Luke Ehly 10 off the bench. East was 9 of 20 from 3-point and 18 of 22 at the line.
Tiylar Cotton completed a terrific tournament for North with 24 points, going 11 of 14 at the line.
