Blue Valley West appeared to be on cruise control Saturday in the fifth-place game of the McPherson Invitational.
The Jaguars led Derby 38-20 late in the third quarter when the Panthers reeled off the final seven points to pull within 11. Derby then added eight straight points to start the fourth quarter and complete a 15-0 run.
But the Jaguars finally steadied the ship to come away with a 53-46 victory.
Derby’s offense sleptwalked in the first half, making just 5 of 14 shots and turning it over 11 times to trail, 30-13. But the Panthers ramped up the intensity in the second half to put up a competitive fight.
Consistent Trey Lucas had another solid game for West with 16 points and nine rebounds to just miss a double-double. Evan Hailes added 12 points and Mikey Chalupa furnished 10.
Nyjee Wright led the Panthers with 12 points, one more than Kenyan Tabor. Trevor Hall chipped in with 10 points.
