HAYS  — Three McPherson High wrestlers earned medals on Saturday in the Prairie Classic hosted by Hays High.

Ty Goss, at 285, led the way by taking third with a 5-1 record. Kaleb Jost, at 182, was fourth at 3-2, while Cole Kretzer had the busiest weekend, going 4-2 at 120 for fifth place.

MHS, which was without standout Austin Eldredge who is out with a concussion, scored 74 points to finish ninth, which is in the top half of the 23-team field. Campus took first, followed by Goodland and Kapaun.

“The team really wrestled tough this weekend,” MHS coach Doug Kretzer said. “We were aggressive and the kids really wrestled with confidence. Each bracket really had some really tough kids. Goss had a really good tourney running his record to 28-6. Cole and Kaleb wrestled great, too. We were really close with Brynton (Crews), Luke (Thompson) and Alex (Grennan) missing the top six by one match.”

The Bullpups, who are undefeated at home, make their final appearance here Thursday when Rose Hill comes to town. The Bullpups are heavily favored in the match as Rose Hill recently lost 54-24 to a Buhler team MHS defeated earlier this season. Should the Bullpups win, they would be perfect in AVCTL Division III matches with a road match left against El Dorado, considered the league’s toughest team.
