McPherson College’s basketball games with Kansas Wesleyan here Wednesday are part of the “Coaches Vs. Cancer Week.”
The teams play at the Sport Center, with a 6 p.m. starting time for the women, with the men to follow. Coaches will be wearing sneakers along with their suits to raise awareness and funds for cancer research through the American Cancer Society. People will also be invited to decorate a paper sneaker and add the name of someone they love who has or who has died of cancer.
It’s also “Champions Club Appreciation Night.”
Somebody is going to end a long losing streak in the men’s game. Mac has dropped six in a row to fall to 2-11 in the KCAC and 6-17 overall. Wesleyan has gone winless in eight straight games after a good start and is now 4-9 in the KCAC and 6-16 overall.
Wesleyan won the first meeting between the teams more than six weeks ago, 67-64.
The women’s game will be the more high profile. The teams are tied for fourth place in the KCAC at 7-6 and the winner takes over sole possession. The top four finishers earn home games for the KCAC playoffs.
Mac has won five of six to improve to 10-13 overall and has won its last six games at home. When the teams met in December in Salina, the Coyotes tied a school record with 17 3-pointers, 15 of those coming in the first three quarters, to key an 89-71 victory.
