The streak is alive after all.
McPherson High standout senior offensive lineman Jake Nikkel was added to the West’s Shrine Bowl football roster on Tuesday. Nikkel was first-team AVCTL Division III during the Bullpups’ 5-4 season, their 10th straight winning campaign.
Members of the Kansas Football Coaches Association were allowed to add a few players to the roster and Nikkel was among those chosen. The Bullpups now have had a Shrine Bowl selection nine years in a row.
“Jake is a very deserving player to get picked to play in this year's Shrine Bowl,” MHS coach Jace Pavlovich said. “He will no doubt represent his school, coaches, players, team and community in a positive way. Jake is one of the best offensive linemen we have had here in a decade. We are also very excited for our streak of nine Shrine Bowl players in a row to continue.”
Tanner Hawkinson started the Shrine Bowl streak, though he didn’t play in the game because he had to report to KU during the summer.
He was followed by Zach Peterson, Joel Piper, Christian Ulsaker, Jordan Hart, Collin French, Garrett Larson and Ty Hart.
The game is scheduled for July 30 at Welch Stadium on the campus of Emporia State University.
