The Olathe East Hawks greatly relied on their defense to win eight of nine games coming into the Mid America Classic.

They haven’t changed the script for the tournament.

The Hawks strafed Hays in Thursday’s opening game, holding the Indians to just seven first-half points on their way to a 44-20 victory.

Olathe East moves into Friday’s 6 p.m. semifinals against the winner of Manhattan and Andale.

The Hawks overcame 14 first-half turnovers and 18 for the game to improve to 9-1.

East picked up the pace in the second half with 17 third-quarter points. Regan Schumacher led the balanced Hawks with 10 points.

Hays was just 7 of 36 from the field and turned it over 24 times as it saw up close and personal the defensive prowess of the Hawks. Audra Schmiedler led Hays with six points.

The Indians play the 3 p.m. game on Friday.
