Wichita Northwest’s box-and-one defense accomplished its goal of containing Shawnee Mission Northwest star Brenni Rose.

While the versatile 6-0 Rose was held under her nearly 20-point average with 14, the rest of the Cougars picked up the slack as they advanced to the semifinals with a 38-25 victory Thursday in another low-scoring, first-round Mid America Classic game.

The three winners so far have scored 44, 44 and 38 points as stout defense has been the rule, not the exception.

The Cougars will play the winner of McPherson and Shawnee Mission South in Friday’s 7:30 feature game.

Shawnee Mission Northwest was in control of the game with a 23-12 halftime lead and the Cougars were content with being patient in the second half to protect that margin. They handled the ball with considerable care with only eight turnovers on the night.

Jordan Nachbar followed Rose with nine points. Madison Surmeier led the Grizzlies with nine and they managed just 9 of 24 from the field, with five of the baskets being treys.
