It was a somewhat bittersweet night for the McPherson High wrestling team on Senior Night here Thursday against Rose Hill.

While MHS barely broke a sweat in a 72-9 victory, several Bullpups trotted to the center of the mat and had their hands raised without ever engaging as the Rockets were open at six weights. Among them were seniors Caleb Giddings, Kaleb Jost and Ty Goss, who had hoped to close out their home careers with impressive performances.

"I really wish we could've gotten all of our seniors a match for their final home competition. This is a really tight class and they've got the opportunity to have a special season with a shot of the AVCTL title," MHS coach Doug Kretzer said.

Also winning by forfeit were Ben Hopkins at 126, Cade Harris at 152 and Alex Grennan at 220.

In actual on-mat matches, the Bullpups made quick work of their opponents. Mya Kretzer at 113, Cole Kretzer at 120, Austin Eldredge at 132, Luke Thompson at 160 and Dylan Baldwin at 195 all won by falls — all of them in the first period.

"I was very pleased with how aggressively we wrestled tonight," Doug Kretzer said.

Several Bullpups caught his eye.

"I was really impressed with Mya (Kretzer) filling in for Seth Morgan, who is out with an injury," Doug Kretzer said. "She is tougher than a $2 steak and to step out on the varsity match and start us off with a fall was awesome. More of the same for Cole (Kretzer) and Austin (Eldredge), who have been rock-solid all season. (Scott) Radke and (Luke) Thompson both had some success last week and it carried over to tonight. Bottom line was our team wrestled like they were on a mission tonight."

The Bullpups, now 12-3 in duals and 4-0 in league matches, have the weekend off for the first time this month.
