The Hays Indians more than doubled their opening-game point total during Friday’s consolation round of the Mid America Classic.

In fact, Hays eclipsed its 20 points of Thursday long before the first half was over as its 30 points gave it a cushion to hold off Andale 45-30 in the first game of the day.

Hays will play Saturday’s 3:45 fifth-place game against the winner of Shawnee Mission South and Wichita Northwest.

Hays, which had extreme difficulties putting the ball in the basket against Olathe East, made 5 of 11 3-pointers in the first half alone to blow out to a 30-18 lead. Andale made a slight run in the third quarter, but a Haley George 3-pointer at buzzer made it a 36-27 game. Andale then went ice cold in the final period as it didn’t score for the first 7:33 before Jaiden Easter ended the drought with a bank-shot 3-pointer.

Talyn Kleweno scored 14 of her game-high 16 points in the first half to lead Hays. The Indians cut their turnovers in half from Thursday with just 12.

Kadey Dreiling led Andale with 12. The Indians play the 2:00 game Saturday against the loser of Shawnee Mission South and Wichita Northwest.
