It was evident after the first day of the Mid America Classic — at least to those who saw all four games — that Shawnee Mission South would finish higher than the No. 8 seed it carried into the tournament.
South played top-seed McPherson High tough for a half in its opener and Friday dominated No. 5 seed Wichita Northwest, 59-43.
The Raiders will play Hays for fifth place at 3:45 p.m. Saturday, while Wichita Northwest will go up against Andale at 2:00 to see which team can garner its first win in the seventh-place game.
Elizabeth Holmes got off to a hot start for the Raiders with 12 first-half points. After leading 26-17 at the break, the Raiders sprinted out to a healthy lead in the third quarter and Northwest never could into an offensive rhythm.
Holmes finished with 16 points and Caroline Shelton had another good game with 14. South shot a whopping 37 free throws, making 22, while Northwest visited the stripe just 8 times, making five.
Cori Carson led Northwest with 13 points.
