It was an Olathe East type of game.
The Hawks thrive in low-scoring, defensive slugfests and Friday they were able to control the tempo to move past No. 2 seed Manhattan 50-33 to advance to the finals of the Mid America Classic.
Olathe East, the No. 3 seed, plays the winner of the final game matching Shawnee Mission Northwest and undefeated McPherson. It's the Hawks' first-ever appearance in the finals.
Cameron Kincaid’s put-back at the first-half buzzer gave East a 25-12 lead. Manhattan had no answer in the half for Sydney Wilson, who scored 10 points.
The Indians, though, started to solve the puzzle in the third quarter, pulling within 27-21 as East scored only two points in the period.
But East point guard Katie Gleason stepped up big in the fourth quarter, sinking 8 of 8 free throws as the Hawks pulled away by making 16 of 19 as a team as the more Manhattan fouled, the further it fell behind.
For the game, East was 20 of 23 from the line and Manhattan was just 3 of 4, though the chasm in free throws didn't develop until late.
Wilson scored 17 points to lead East, while Gleason scored 13 and Regan Schumacher added 10.
Gigi McAtee led Manhattan with nine. The Indians play the third-place game at 5:30 Saturday.
