Regular-season play came to an end for McPherson’s seventh-grade boys here Monday and the team recorded a split in games with Maize.
The A-team finished 8-5 with a 37-31 victory and will play Derby at 10 a.m. Saturday at Derby Middle School in the first round of tournament play.
Max Alexander had the hot hand with 16 points.
“We beat a huge Maize team tonight,” MMS coach Tim Hein said. “They out-sized us at every position and they were very athletic. We were behind at halftime and were tied going into the fourth quarter. We were able to win the last quarter 13-7. I loved the fight in us tonight. We did not shoot very well, even though we were at home. We defended like a Bullpup team should. EJ Hein and Eli Pyle kept us very calm under the pressure of a tight fourth quarter and we put them away.”
The B-team lost 34-28, but still had a winning record at 7-6. There is no B-tournament.
Cael Bauer led a balanced attack with six points.
“Zac Butler showed tremendous effort on the defensive end tonight,” Hein said. “He hounded the ball constantly. Dakota Istas rebounded like a man. Cael Bauer and Brennan Gipson gave us the offensive spark that we needed to keep us in the game. Ten separate guys scored tonight. That shows that this team is very unselfish. I’m proud of how they competed and improved this year.”
