DERBY — McPherson’s eighth-grade girls had little trouble advancing in the Pioneer League Basketball Tournament on Saturday.

The Bullpups excelled at both ends for a 52-8 rout of Derby North. That advances them to Tuesday’s second round with Salina Lakewood the opponent.

Ten Bullpups scored, led by Andrea Sweat with 14 points. Lakyn Schieferecke chipped in with 10.

“The ladies came out and played really well and got off to a great start,” MMS coach Jay Crawford said. “It really gets your energy going when you see the ball go through the basket. We shared the ball well and looked for each other, which makes us a better team. Our defense has been good for us all season and we took them out of everything they wanted to run.”

MMS (52) — Mayfield 2, Tice 2, Carlson 2, Collins 2, Strathman 4, Johnson 5, Pham 5, Cooks 6, Schieferecke 10, Sweat 14.
