STERLING — Just when it appeared Bethany College’s men might be getting ready to start a hot streak, along came Sterling.
The Warriors dealt the Swedes a 76-73 setback on Saturday, hurting Bethany’s chances to host a first-round KCAC playoff game.
Bethany is now 7-9 in the KCAC as it missed a golden opportunity to get back to .500. Overall the Swedes are 10-16.
Gary Jones led the Swedes with 21 points, while Joey Habtemariam added 19. Jonathan Gidson was the third Swede in doubles with 12.
Maurice Williams poured in 23 points for Sterling, which also received 13 apiece from Josiah Ray and Brandon Givans. Roland Gardner scored 11.
Bethany, which was trying to win its third straight game, is home on Thursday to take on Saint Mary.
• STERLING WOMEN 52, BETHANY 42 — Bethany’s defense continues to shine, but the offense has dried up.
After scoring just 39 points on Thursday against McPherson College, the Swedes’ offensive woes continued against Sterling as the Swedes are all but out of the KCAC playoff picture as they are 4-12.
Bethany, 8-17 overall, was paced by Joleen Chanco with 15 points, one more than Paige Stewart. Jordin Greer led Sterling with 16 points.
The Swedes host Saint Mary on Thursday.
