In a stunning turn of events, McPherson College head baseball coach Shawn Powell resigned on Saturday, the day of the Bulldogs’ first game in New Mexico.

According to a press release from the college, Powell resigned for “personal reasons.”

Assistant coach Aaron Martinez will step up as the interim head coach as a search begins for a new coach.

“I sincerely wish coach Powell the best in his future endeavors," Director of Athletics Andrew Ehling said. "Timing is never great when a coach steps down, however the administration and coaches are prepared to step up for our baseball student-athletes."

Under Martinez, the Bulldogs split their opener Saturday with the University of Southwest in games played in Hobbs, N.M. Mac won the opener 6-1 and was edged 4-3 in the nightcap. No game information was available.

It’s the second straight year the Bulldogs have changed coaches during the season. Ehling had been the head coach before accepting the AD job during the season, with Powell assuming command. Mac was 8-44 last year, 2-26 in the KCAC.
