MHS boys scuttle Great Bend

On two straight possessions here Tuesday, McPherson High's boys gave up a total of five offensive rebounds to Great Bend.

That didn't sit well with MHS coach Kurt Kinnamon.

He immediately called a timeout and his message could be heard clear in Galva.

After that, the Bullpups pounded the boards.

And Great Bend, 67-34.

"The one thing we're going to have to do a better job of is rebounding the basketball," Kinnamon said. "I did see that we ended up and edged ahead of them. One reason we don't rebound very well is that we don't do a lot of rebound drills in practice because, to be honest, I'd rather get out-rebounded than get a sprained ankle. Rebounding drills lead to sprained ankles."

MHS, which played without starting point guard Marcus McDaniel who was out with the flu, struggled early with just a 12-4 lead after a quarter. But back-to-back 3-pointers at the end of the first half by Ben Pyle and Drew Pyle allowed the Bullpups to double up the Panthers 30-15 at the half and then they systematically took apart the Panthers in the second half.

Drew Pyle was a heat-seeking 4 of 4 from 3-point and scored 25 points in 24 minutes of play. Kinnamon was able to get a lot of players in, with 10 marking in the book. Ben Pyle had nine points, five assists and three steals, while Jacob Loecker again impressed Kinnamon with his hustle. The MHS coach also liked how Drew Labertew and Jake Alexander responded in their first starts, with Labertew again not missing a shot.

The MHS JVs were in lockdown defensive mode in a 52-19 rout. Twelve Bullpups scored, with Paxton Leaf leading the way with nine points.

The ninth-grade boys placed four players in double figures in a high-scoring 67-53 victory. Gabe Hoover’s 17 points led the way, Chandler Wiard and Kyler Hoppes added 16 apiece and Jace Kinnamon furnished 10.

The Bullpups finally return to AVCTL Division III action on Friday when they make their next-to-last road trip to Rose Hill.
